Interview with Malcolm Rifkind, part 4 On US attack on Syria, meeting Tillerson – Lavrov and terrorist threat from Central Asia

VM: In recent days, we faced dramatic events: the terrorist attacks in St. Petersburg and Stockholm, the US strike in Syria.

Let us start with the US attack with cruise missiles on the Syrian airbase. This attack, according to Washington, was taken as a response to the use of the chemical weapon by the Syrian air force against the anti-government forces.

The Russian and the Syrian governments reject the possibility that Assad regime was behind the chemical attack. The UN representatives on the ground are not sure what gas was used and who was to be blamed. The Turkish government has agreed to carry out investigation three days after the US attack and, as it seems, under pressure from Moscow. As a result of his negotiations in Moscow with Lavrov and Putin, Tillerson also agreed to carry out impartial investigation and, as I understand, that will be discussed in Geneva at a meeting between Russian, UN and US representatives.

О новых интервью. Небольшой анонс

Первые части интервью с бывшим британским министром иностранных дел и министром обороны Малкольмом Рифкиндом вызвали интерес у читателей не только в России, но и в Великобритании, и я намерен продолжать проект.

На очереди, – и об этом я хочу проинформировать читателей, – несколько новых интервью, причем с людьми, которые не только представляют и отражают взгляды на мир нынешней интеллектуальной, политической и бизнес элиты, как, например, в случае с Малкольмом Рифкиндом, но с теми, кто опережает многих из тех, кто правит сейчас нашим миром.

Так, в ближайшее время я начну публикацию интервью с Дэвидом Вудом, одним из создателей смартфона, лидером и председателем движения британских футуристов. Мы с ним уже обсудили основные направления беседы, главные темы, которые поднимем. В частности, мы обсудим такие вопросы:

Interview with Malcolm Rifkind, part 3, On Brexit, Global War Threat and on Litvinenko case

VM: – Now, let us come to Brexit.

 

MR: – Yes.

 

VM: – Brexit, the election of Trump, growing popularity of right parties in Europe. Do these events have the same reasons, or they are the results of different trends?

 

MR: – They have some things in common, but, inevitably, each country is different. In some cases it is populism. But again I come back to the point: the United Kingdom is in a unique situation. Many countries are Eurosceptic – in Poland, in France, in Netherlands. But because of their history they see being the European Union as reinforcing their democracy and their rule of law. And if I was from these countries I would cheer on EU. So they put up with the things that irritate them in the EU but they see it as overriding benefit from being in that structure.

О Брекзите, угрозе глобальной войны, британо-российских отношениях и о деле Литвиненко

ВМ: – Вернемся к Европе и Брекзиту.

МР: – Да.

ВМ: – Брекзит, выборы Трампа, растущая популярность правых партий в Европе… Связаны ли эти события общими причинами, или это результаты разных тенденций?

МР: – У них есть что-то общее, но во всех странах причины разные, и это неизбежно. В некоторых случаях это популизм. Но я вновь возвращаюсь к тому, что Великобритания находится в уникальных условиях. Для многих стран характерен евроскепсис – для Польши, Франции, Нидерландов. Но в связи со своей историей они видят членство в Европейском Союзе как способ укрепить собственную демократию, сохранить правовое государство. И если бы я был родом из этих стран, я бы поддерживал такую точку зрения. Они мирятся с тем, что их раздражает в ЕС, но, в их восприятии, польза от пребывания в этой структуре преобладает.

Interview with Sir Malcolm Rifkind, part 2. On US-Russia and US-EU relations, on Ukraine’s independence, NATO and regional superpowers

VM: – Now, we have come to the US – Russia relations and US – EU relations. What do you think, how Trump policy will change the US – Russian and US – EU relations?

 

MR: – I think, in some respect, in terms of Russia relations, Trump’s arrival might help. Let me put forward the scenario, but just as an illustration, I’m sorry to come back to Ukraine, but it’s relevant, it’s the best example.

VM: – As an illustration…

 

MR: – Russia, I suspect, would like to resolve this crisis in its relationship with the rest of the world. It’s not helping Russia, that crisis and the sanctions, political difficulties, and these people in the West would also like to see progress. When you have problems of that kind, they require compromises; they require both sides to make important concessions.
